CLT Floors Team · May 2026 · 5 min read

The shower is one of the most-used surfaces in your home — and one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a bathroom. Whether you are replacing aging tile, converting a tub to a walk-in shower, or building a fully custom curbless shower from scratch, the cost depends on a few clear variables.

At CLT Floors, we have completed shower remodels across Charlotte from basic retiles to full custom builds with rain heads, marble-look large-format tile, and frameless glass enclosures. Here is an honest breakdown of what Charlotte homeowners actually spend.

What Is Included in a Shower Remodel

A proper shower remodel is more than a cosmetic update. The work that happens before the tile goes up is what determines whether your shower performs well long-term or develops leaks, mold, and tile failures within a few years.

Demolition and removal — existing tile, backer board, and any damaged substrate are removed completely. We assess the framing and subfloor for any hidden water damage before the build phase begins.

Waterproofing membrane — applied to all shower walls and the shower floor before any tile is set. This is the single most important step in any shower installation.

Cement backer board — installed over the waterproofing on all wall surfaces. Tile does not adhere properly to drywall in wet environments.

Tile installation — floor, walls, niche, and any accent or liner work. Layout is planned before the first tile is set for correct centering and alignment.

Grout and sealing — grout color selection, application, and sealing where appropriate.

Fixture installation — shower valve, head, hand shower, and any additional fixtures are installed or coordinated for homeowner installation.

Glass enclosure — frameless or semi-frameless glass door or panel installed after tile cure. Frameless glass is the premium option and is increasingly standard in Charlotte bathroom remodels.

What Drives the Cost of a Shower Remodel in Charlotte

Tile Selection

Tile is the largest single variable in shower remodel pricing. A 3x6 subway tile shower surround and a large-format marble-look shower are dramatically different in material cost, labor time, and skill required.

Shower Size

The larger the shower, the more tile, more backer board, and more labor. A standard 3x3 shower stall and a 5x4 curbless shower are entirely different scopes.

Curbless vs Standard Build

A curbless shower requires the floor to be sloped toward a linear or center drain without any curb to contain water. The added cost over a standard curbed shower is typically $800 to $2,000 depending on floor complexity.

Tub-to-Shower Conversion

Converting a tub alcove to a walk-in shower is one of the most popular bathroom upgrades we complete in Charlotte. Most tub-to-shower conversions in Charlotte run $4,000 to $8,500 depending on tile selection and whether a glass enclosure is included.

Glass Enclosure

A frameless glass shower door or panel is typically the final major cost item in a shower remodel. Frameless glass runs $800 to $2,500 for a standard single-door application, depending on glass thickness and hardware finish.

Signs Your Shower Needs to Be Replaced, Not Repaired

Grout that keeps coming back moldy — persistent mold in grout lines usually means water is getting behind the tile. A surface repair will not fix this.

Hollow-sounding or loose tile — if shower tiles sound hollow or flex slightly, the bond to the backer board has failed.

Tile that has cracked at the corners or along grout lines — cracking at grout joints often indicates movement in the subfloor or wall.

Visible mold or staining on the exterior wall behind the shower — water has penetrated the wall assembly and the shower needs to be fully rebuilt with proper waterproofing.

In all of these cases, a full demo and rebuild with proper waterproofing is the right long-term investment.
